Nip Negativity In The Bud When Talking About Your Business

“So, Diana,” clients ask, “what should I say when people ask me how my business is, when in all honesty, it’s a bit lackluster in sales right now?” Speak confidently and from the heart about the Value you have to offer, share stories of satisfied customers and information about your newest product. Keep your conversation rooted in the positive!

I was recently at a networking event and while one of the business owners was giving her “introductory elevator speech”, she ended up talking about how expensive gas is, how it’s affecting her delivery costs, etc., etc.  Business is slow, people aren’t buying.  She’s got a great service, yet this fact was completely overridden by her personal angst. Unfortunately, what we were left with was the impression that her business isn’t doing well.  It’s just not a great way to attract new customers.

My coaching tip?  Nip negativity in the bud!  Don’t commiserate; don’t tell stories of how things aren’t going well and talk about the” bad” economy.  Do keep conversation flowing and on a positive note.  If you need to “let off steam,” do so in your journal or with a trusted confidante.  Better yet, go for a long run or swim and transform your negative energy.

Try it, it works!
