game on!

I recently attend the  Conversation Among Masters, a coaching conference held at the gorgeous Grove Park Inn, with close to 200 master coaches in attendance from all over the world (incl. the US), to learn, converse and connect. One of our speakers was Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational. In Dan’s presentation, he shared what he’s discovered and distilled from his research via what he calls “experiments” and also through extensive use of  surveys.

As a coach and inspirational motivational speaker and facilitator, this is a favorite topic for me. I leaned in to learn.

Here are  3 strategies to help strengthen your resolve AND your results. Game on!

1. Re-engineer your environment

If you are going on a low-fat diet, finally writing your book, or boldly move your career forward, the context in which you set up your goals (your environment) is really important. Going on a diet? Ditch the fatty, tempting foods in your kitchen pantry. Writing your first book? Be mindful to create an environment that truly supports your best writing. Remove distractions. Hide your cell phone. Just say no to multi-tasking. Huge goals are more doable and achievable if we deliberately design our environment to truly support our desired outcome. How can you re-engineer your own environment so you can achieve that important goal of yours?

2. Think “Systems”

Innate desire and discipline are the “power couple” for getting things done. Ariely’s tip? Match your desire to achieve your goal with deliberate benchmarks and deadlines. By designing your action plan and plugging these actions into your calendar,  success rates are bound to be much, much higher. Ariely’s research indicates that we are motivated to avoid painful consequences. A deadline such as the US tax day (April 15th) is a great example. The majority of us don’t want the painful consequence of being penalized and paying extra, so we get our act together, albeit for some, it’s literally completed at the last possible minute! What goal do you have that needs to be more clearly defined and integrated into your work-life calendar? Do you have deadlines?

3. Say it out loud

Telling others about our goals is a powerful strategy. Sharing our goal commitments with a mentor, coach or trusted colleague, we automatically up-level our game. Most of us have  a strong innate inclination to avoid to disappoint and let others down. By investing money in personal and business coaching, you send a message to yourself and to your coach that you are serious about your goals. Articulating your goals on paper, communicating them, and working through obstacles with a trusted and supportive partner will amplify your commitment and solidify your results. Who are your success partners? Ready for your own coach?

Yogi Parmahansa Yoganada taught that our environment is stronger than our will and to attain one’s goals, he advised to surround yourself with people who are actively striving toward a similar goal.

Wise counsel.

Which of these 3 strategies  can you grab onto, claim and implement today?

want better results without all the head + heart aches?

Want better results in your business and in your personal life?

Most of us do.

Problem is that sometimes we get stuck and feel like we’re on a treadmill, working hard but achieving less than our heart’s desire.

We’ve all been there, right? Who hasn’t  gotten “jazzed” about  new financial goals, weight loss  or fitness program ?  These new initiatives start off  with our  enthusiasm and positive intentions in place.

Unfortunately, things can start to go in the wrong direction quickly if you haven’t  set up simple structures to support your success  so that you can’t help but succeed. The failure rate in self-initiated programs is rather dismal. (Weight loss and getting back into shape are classic examples.) However, impressive results do come from participation in facilitated step-by-step programs that include personal coaching and accountability.

The best place to start is clearly defining what you want to achieve. Take out some paper, brainstorm, lay out your plans, strategy + actions steps, THEN take time to design your life in such a way that its easy to take the actions you need to make it happen.. Take a bold stand for what is important to you and organize yourself around this priority goal.

Here’s a case in point: One of my clients, a very successful businessman with both a thriving brick and mortar business and an information product internet business, needed a better, more efficient way to achieve his dreams: to create an ongoing series of informational products. In a coaching meeting, we explored to shape his environment so that he achieved his goals, quickly and effectively.

His problem? He was so busy with both of his businesses, family and community commitments that he couldn’t find the time to work on this important project. It kept getting pushed back and he was becoming frustrated with lack of progress with his goal.

His solution?  A solo-weekend. He checked into a nearby hotel, turned off all electronic devices (no cell, no internet, no distractions of any kind)..and guess what? He was able to fully be present to his writing project.  Mission accomplished: His newest e-book is complete and is now selling briskly.

The key is to truth. What do you  honestly need to be successful with this current project?  Do you need to clear your calendar and focus ONLY on this goal for a week? Do you need lots of body-care ( massages ,good food, and creative environment to be your absolute best?  Give yourself permission to design your life to support your goals.

Life’s too short for regrets and following other peoples rules.

To launch your dreams, become more mindful of how you can design your life, your time and your actions and watch the magic happen!

stop it!

What’s on your Stop-It-List?

I was inspired to create my own Stop-It- List after reading a brilliant post by Danielle Laporte @ White Hot Truth
Myself included, I am amazed at how long, complicated and out of alignment our own to-do-list’s can become.
Same for my clients. I love my clients and their enthusiasm. On our coaching calls they come  with strong desire to get things done and share their very lengthy and impressive to-do lists.
Things like:
Big goals:Books,Profits, Mates.Empire Building.
Important goals: Time Management.Focus. Organization.
Urgent goals: Make payroll. Revive their marriage.Health. Stress Management.
Soul goals: Freedom,  Truth, Happiness. Joy. Meaning.
All important goals, dutifully listed on the to-do-list.
Knowing what you want is obviously a plus.
What  is often missing is  the truth about what is in the way.
You know, the crazy detours that life hands us OR the roadblocks that we unwittingly create for ourselves.
What do you need to stop? Immediately?
Here are a few prompting questions to prime  the pump for your own, “stop-it ” list:
How do you sabotage your own goals?( are you a great starter, but not so good at finishing?) stop it!

What are your energy leaks?( do you let other peoples opinions or their priorities take up your time, draining your energy levels?) stop it!

What are you tolerating in your personal and work environment?( do you lack the support you truly need? do you skimp on the products and services that would make a big difference in your business? do you have loose boundaries?) Stop it!

Choose  3 things you are committed to STOP doing!
And…stop doing them.
I promise you, your personal and professional life will get a huge energy boost. The simple exercise of cutting out what is unnecessary, draining, or toxic will allow you more available energy to do what really matters to you.
What will you stop doing?
Are you ready to  do what really matters most?

learn to say no, so you can say yes.

You’ve seen the movie, The Secret, you’ve made a vision board, your book shelves are full of motivational books,  you’re a jedi-master of  course correcting your inner critic. You are doing lots of the “right” things to achieve those big goals of yours.

But wait… things aren’t exactly going the way you would like them to.

You’re  up to your eyeballs with personal and work commitments.

You feel stressed and overworked.

Being in joy feels like a foreign concept.

In a past survey I conducted, I asked people what their top challenge was with time management. Hands down, the biggest challenge people face is how to prioritize! It seems that in the age of excess, we have an absolute abundance of opportunities, choices and decisions to make everyday.

Our to-do lists begin to resemble an unraveling, never ending Scroll of Actions to be taken.

All the while, our  BIG GOAL, aka our deepest, fondest wishes and desires aka our BIG DREAM, are pushed back to the back burner because, darn it, there’s just not enough time to do everything.

Sound familiar?

The solution? Living and breathing our truest priorities. Not just giving our dreams lip service, but truly designing our days with our top  priorities inked into our calendar.

Here’s a quick 3 step power tool  I teach all of my clients in all of my coaching programs & seminars.

1.  Define your juicy big goal- ( this could be creating an exciting cash goal, moving to Italy, or starting your own consulting business ) Honor this dream. Write it down. Find a visual anchor, maybe a picture or symbol of your goal & keep it in a place you can see it every day.

2. Design your weekly plan -  Set a time over your weekend to dream and design your week. What do you want to accomplish? What is wanting to emerge? What needs completing? Starting? Released?   Write down your top 3-5 priority goals for the week & map out your  action plan.  Immediately  plug these  into your calendar. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for each action step. Do this weekly planning each and every week. Buy some champagne because once you start doing your weekly action plans, you’re going to be celebrating & toasting your fine self!
3. Stay true to yourself- Be sure to honor  your BIG GOALS by doing what you need to do in the upcoming week. When other “things” come up you MUST ask yourself, “Does doing this move me closer to my desired goal?” You’ve got to do some “tough love” with yourself. It’s easy to get distracted and get interrupted everyday with things that just aren’t that important. What’s more important…  yardwork or writing the first chapter of the book you’ve been dreaming of publishing?

Be strong.

Be accountable.

Learn to say NO to those things that keep you from living your dream.

Say yes to your dreams.
